Me on Whitehaven beach back in 2012!

Hello all, and welcome to RooAroundTheWorld.com!

“Travel tales and tips from a London girl with a serious case of wanderlust”

This is a site all about my adventures as I travel around the world – I’ll try to keep you up to date with all the fun things I get up to, as well as bring you reviews, trip planning advice and heaps of awesome travel inspiration.

If this is your first time visiting the site, I’d suggest you pop over to my ‘Start Here’ page, where you will find more of the fun stuff and heaps of suggestions of what to read to get you started, whether you’re looking for stories of travel antics, awesome photos, a bit of advice or simply some travel ramblings.

Ok, so where to start?

My name’s Rusja, but no one can ever pronounce it (thanks, parents!) so everyone calls me Roo. I’m a writer, photographer, filmmaker, skateboarder and snowboarder and well… I LOVE to travel.

After a few awesome trips abroad I spent 3 years of my life at University studying Film, travelling when I could, but mostly dreaming of the day I would be set free. During my 2nd year of Uni I took part in the STA World Traveller Intern Competition and the passion was ignited. Unfortunately I didn’t win (I did get one of the runner up positions though), but through that competition this blog was born, and it’s been growing ever since.

I love the winter life too!

So finally in November 2011, after finishing my degree with a 1st, I set off around the world on an epic 11-month trip, visiting 10 countries in total and having the time of my life. This trip made me realise that I really couldn’t ever be happy living in one place and working a 9-5, so the dream of being an eternal nomad was born.

Since then there have been a few bumps and bruises along the way (all documented here, of course), but for the most part, these last few years have been pretty spectacular – I’ve been enjoying heaps of epic adventures, meeting great people and learning new skills all over the world.

I’ve spent a winter season honing my boarding skills in the snowy mountains of the French ski resort Les Arcs, worked as Media Director at a US Summer Camp (the best job in the world), lived down under in the bustling city of Sydney, road tripped to glorious Byron Bay, and even worked on a sustainable farm in Oz where I learnt to milk goats, spin honey and even got to try my hand at bee keeping.

That’s me on the left!

Travelling always has its ups and downs, so there’ll often be a bit of hilarity and ridiculousness on this site too, like that time my friend’s bed got peed on in Brisbane, or the time I spent 30 hours on a bus to Vietnam, or even when I nearly died falling off the edge of a cliff while sledging in France.

Blogging for this site isn’t all I do though – I also do a bit of freelance work here and there to support my travels too. I’ve written for travel sites such as My Destination, Gapyear.com, Hostelzoo and Natives; worked as a travelling intern for Gap Daemon; and blogged for CCUSA Australia & 3 Adventures about my time at Summer Camp.

RooAroundTheWorld.com has also been featured in a few places too – you’ll find the site mentioned by Currency Fair, Native Foreigner Magazine and even in an ebook about why going to uni isn’t always the only option in life. You’ll also find me over on Backpacks and Bunkbeds were I was interviewed about my nomadic lifetstyle.

Oh, I like to climb on things too

Over the next few years I’ve got heaps of exciting plans that involve visiting new countries and getting some qualifications that will hopefully allow me to keep travelling, earning, having a sweet time and, of course, keeping you all in the loop.

So that’s pretty much it, that’s me and my blog in a nutshell. I hope you enjoy it and why not keep up with it all via Twitter (@rooaroundworld), my Facebook page and on Instagram (@rusjafoster) where I post some of the best snaps from my trips.

Right, now I’m off for a skate…where’s my board?
