Monthly Spending Summary: Oct ’15

How is it the end of November already?! Once again, I’m super behind on the spending summary post… whoops. Okay, so, October. Wow. It was a heaps busy month spent learning to surf and then backpacking around Costa Rica and Panama (there are plenty more posts all about my trip coming soon), seeing some awesome sights and really trying to keep the costs down – Costa Rica is far more expensive than I had imagined it would be.

Distance Travelled:

Jaco to Manuel Antonio (RTN) – 91 miles

Jaco to Montezuma –  35 miles

Montezuma to Santa Teresa – 12 miles

Santa Teresa to Sámara – 94 miles

Sámara to Monteverde – 99.5 miles

Monteverde to La Fortuna – 75 miles

La Fortuna to Puerto Viejo – 182 miles

Puerto Viejo to Bocas del Toro (RTN) – 142 miles

Puerto Viejo to San Jose – 135 miles

San Jose to NYC (via Miami) – 3000 miles

Total = 3865.5 miles

Countries: Costa Rica, Panama, USA
Cities/Towns: Jaco, Quepo, Manuel Antonio, Hermosa, Montezuma, Santa Teresa, Sámara, Monteverde, La Fortuna, Puerto Viejo, Bocas del Toro, Isla Bastimentos, San Jose, New York City
Transport Used: Bus, Boat, Shuttle, Taxi, Plane
Money Spent (in USD): $1808.59 over 31 days = $58.34 per day (or £27.34)!

Phew… that’s much better than last month! Considering Costa Rica really isn’t that cheap, and we did a LOT of awesome activities (such as a coffee tour, a night hike and visited plenty of national parks) and spent a vast amount of money on transport because the local buses were a nightmare, £27 per day isn’t too bad. We focused a lot on trying to buy food from local supermarkets and cook our own meals, rather than eating out, and always tried to find the cheapest (but nicest) places to stay in each location. Not too shabby.

Breakdown of my spending :

Vacation: $459
Wardrobe: $346.92 (I went shopping in NYC)
Transport: $345.80
Food: $286.69
Auto: $173 (this was for the car rental in California last month)
Groceries: $123.18
Amusement: $35
Misc: $30
Utilities: $9

Total: $1808.59

Biggest Expense/Unforeseen Splurges: OK, I went little crazy in New York and basically bought an entire new wardrobe to take back to the UK. But aside from that, there wasn’t anything huge that I spent money on – just the normal travelling expenses of food, transport and accommodation.
